Every year I try to enter something in the Competitive Exhibits at the San Diego County Fair.  Generally my entries are very amateurish compared to the hardcore entrants (every year there are people that DOMINATE different categories) and I never expect to win, but it gives me an excuse to do something crafty, PLUS I get a free ticket to the fair out of it!

This year, I decided to try something new and enter the Needlepoint/Cross Stitch competition.  It gave me a new craft to try and learn.  I'm pretty new to cross-stitching, and in retrospect I had NO IDEA how long it would actually take me to complete my submission.  I have never worked so hard on something that ended up looking so simple.  I've estimated that I have spent at least 60 hours and made more than 10,000 stitches in this project. But in the end, I was pretty happy with how things turned out, all things considered.

I present to you, my Cross Stitch sampler entry for the San Diego County Fair 2011 Needlepoint and Sewing competitive exhibit!

This cross-stitch sampler is a tribute to the old school Atari video games that I played as a kid.  The three that are featured here are Pac-Man, Centipede, and Space Invaders.  I played these games endlessly on my Atari 5200 game system, and had so much fun with them.  Video games have since become such an elaborate and sophisticated experience-- sometimes I just yearn for the simplicity of an 8-bit video game with a joystick and one button! These games may seem old school, they never go out of style.

When I turned my entry in, the older ladies volunteering at the Fair gave my project an odd look.  That's right ladies, this isn't a traditional sampler with pretty flowers, animals, houses, and alphabets.  It's not traditional by any means.  If the judges' reactions to my piece is anything remotely close to the reactions of the ladies that took in my entry, then chances are I have zero chance of winning anything.  BUT, I know that some child of the 80's will stumble upon this during the fair, as they hang out in the Home and Hobby exhibit to enjoy the air conditioning in the exhibit hall. And when they see this they'll give it an approving nod in agreement, and that's all I'm really looking to get out of this. Smiley

Great job! I love the writing for the "old school" part!

I think it's really awesome that you're scaring the old blue hairs with your non-traditional cross-stitch. You'd certainly get my vote Smiley.

I wish I was one of the judges. I would crown you Queen of All that is Awesome.

I think it was 1979 when I spent most of my college book money on Space Invaders.

I think it's really awesome that you're scaring the old blue hairs with your non-traditional cross-stitch.

hey, hey hey -- it's really hard to keep white hair white!

I too would totally vote for your project! Great work!  There's something about cross stitch craft and old school video games that seem like a match made in heaven.

I LOVE this. I don't think it looks simple at all--the gradient on the lettering is fab!  Excellent job! As a child of the 80's - I thank you--

I think it's wonderful that you showed them all that cross stitching can do other things than the traditional samplers. I like your modern twist on the sample. You are including a younger audience into this crafting medium. I like the ironic twist too, using a traditional or old school craft like cross stitching to celebrate retro video gaming.

@ChaniLM - OMG!!!!! I can't believe I wrote "SYLE!" Holy crap!!! I didn't notice it at all until you just pointed it out! And neither did any of the other people who looked at it!  My hubby and I just had a belly laugh at this major error... my goodness.  And he kept joking as I was making this that it would be hilarious if I accidentally misspelled something!!

Maybe that's why the blue hairs were frowning!!! Shocked

I really wish I could tell you which one element I love about this piece but I can't even begin to start narrowing it down like that. Classic sampler style, colors, what it says, what it means, the games you used and how...

This is one of those pieces that I have just sat here and LOOKED at various times today and at length.

I'm in Sacramento and know what you mean in regards to entering in the county/state fair and the looks that come with non-traditional pieces. I hope you get to spend some time near your piece when it is on display, you will have no problem finding love from fair-goers for a piece like this!

I actually looked at this piece numerous times and started replying before I realized I had not even read your actual post (sorry). So is this the very first cross stitch you have done or did you do any "practice pieces" before hand? Regardless if it's your first or fiftieth piece it's flat out awesome!

As a "blue hair", I think this is awesome and the syle can definitely be played as a secret code Cheesy. It's so cool, it doesn't have style, it has syle...cause it so smooth.  Wink

Excellent stitching!

Cheesy I absolutely heart your entry!!!  You did such a great job and WOW for your 1st time!  I would definitely be in the party that smiles at this entry if i were to step into that air conditioned area of the fairgrounds!!!  There is a pizza spot we go to here in Vegas that has a Ms. Pacman and Asteroids combo old school arcade game.  I <3 playing Ms. Pacman and my fella goes for the Asteroids, I seriously want that machine in our house!!!  You should get yourself one of those plug-in Pac-man games, just plugs right into the tv...my guy got me one for Christmas a couple of years ago, simple joystick "joy". Thank you for sharing!!!!!

REALLY awesome...and play off the "syle" thing. maybe it was some incredibly rare processor used in the first Ataris? Or maybe it was the manufacturer name of the company that made the ball top to the joystick on the arcade games? either way, your piece has definite syle...I LOVE it!!! well done & good luck!

Here's a quick update on the Old School Video Game Sampler that I posted a few weeks ago (http://www.craftster.org/forum/index.php?topic=381465.0) that I entered into the County Fair this year.

I went to the fair yesterday to see the other exhibitors' work, and to check on my piece, not expecting to win.  But much to my surprise, I won SECOND PLACE in my class!!! I was so stoked as this was not only my first time entering the needlepoint division of the Fair, but it was also my first major cross stitch project! Guess I won on "Syle" points! Smiley

Thanks everyone for all your support on Craftster, especially through my "syle" fiasco! Smiley

Honestly, the best artwork does buck the traditional trends a bit, and your work referenced something relevant in our lifetimes, which is video games. Traditional cross stitch samplers have pictures of wildlife, flowers and homes. Honestly, we're not in the homesteading phase and none of us are pioneers anymore. It's cute that the tradition lives on, but it's also nice to have a little newness to an old craft.

Have you seen the subversive cross stitch lady? If what you made stirred the pot, her work definitely stirs the pot. Her work has the traditional look to it, but it uses a lot of potty language.

I know right? How do you work with that?! I guess I could but I am not really familiar with binary. It's not a huge loss. I have other crafts I am interested in making for our fair, but the sampler thing just bums me out  Undecided

Edit: Maybe Disney font...hmmmm

As someone who enters cross-stitch in the Kansas State Fair every year, I'm so proud of you! As someone who never wins with her cross-stitch in the Kansas State Fair every year (well, once I got 3rd place), I'm totally jealous!
My husband & I joke that until I do a church with an American Flag, kittens, firefighters & "Remember 9/11" stitched up, I won't ever win. Last year was the first year (of entering 7 years in a row) that I didn't get asked if I was dropping off a piece for my mother-never mind that I'm in my 30s.
Keep it up! Cheesy

I'd vote for that in a heartbeat!  If the point of samplers is to evoke a feeling of nostalgia, then we who grew up in the rcades and not in gardens SHOULD cross stitch samplers of Pac Man and Galaga.  (Or is that Galaxian? Grin)
