Hello! I'm Ali and I live in Washington where running a business is surprisingly simple and a business license is like 25 dollars. However, June 18th, I'm moving to Hillsboro, OR. The lovely state of Oregon has baffled me and I'm now completely lost....

I do freelance work, and I have an Etsy shop with one item in it LOL. I've been googling, researching, reading through scorepdx.org, surfing the IRS, etc. But I'm still lost.

What I've learned so far:
In Oregon, you can have an Etsy shop, all you need to do is register a business name if it's different than your actual name.

What I'm absolutely confused about:
To have something of a business, just sole proprietorship or a single person LLC, what all needs to be done?
To do freelance work, do I need to register for a business?
How does paying taxes work in Oregon since you don't charge sales tax?
Do I need to pay tax for freelancing in Oregon?
Anything else I should know?

Please give me lots of advice. I need to know how to do this kind of thing properly in Oregon, because I'm going to be trying to use my skills to pay at least a little of my art school tuition (I start in August) and I don't want to be quite in debt up to my eyeballs... Up to my nose is another story though.  Grin

(I don't live in Oregon, but here's what i would do...)  Contact the county offices and ask about business licenses.  hopefully they can refer you to either a real live expert to help you or a webpage that should explain being a small business in that county.  good luck!
