Being a high school teacher, I always love a coffee gift card.  No matter the amount on the card ($5 is just as thoughtful as more).  It's really the thought that counts.

You're a great mom to think of your children's teachers even as they get older.  I cannot tell you how much a nice note from my students is (especially after writing 30-40 college recommendation letters).  It means so much that they think to do that!

I think right now what he would want more than anything else would be an Office Depot gift card...  Their entire English department combined has one working printer, and it's on its last leg where ink is concerned.  Craft-wise, though, magnets are great!  He'd also really appreciate book-inspired artwork, especially if the books were ones he uses in his classes.  In fact, I may need to get on that for him!  I think he'd also really love poetry magnets that the kids could use.

What a great question...what do the men want?!!!

We usually give a gift card to something--the sandwich shop next door, etc--to any male teachers, though this y ear I think they'd have gotten some supplies, too.

koolcreativity--I'm glad a note is welcome in the higher grades. I wrote the usual mom thank you note, but my DD wrote specific thank you notes to each teacher, telling exactly what she liked and would remember about them/their class. (I have my box of notes upstairs, too, saved from day one of teaching!) She's considering teaching English herself, and some of these particular teachers helped put that idea in her head!

As another teacher I would totally love that someone put this effort in.

I work at an 'at risk' school, so often the parents are as bad (if not worse) than the kids. The best things are kids coming up and saying something nice. It does make your day to know someone valued your efforts.

Oh, yeah. The parents are the ones who put the kids at risk, right?

Apples and trees.

(At my first teaching job--fresh from grad school--I was OLDER than many of the moms of my 6-7-8th graders. Sad )
