I made this guy for the Labyrinth swap. He's been in transit from Canada to Scotland for 7 weeks now
I hope the little guy gets to his home soon!
*Please note: this pattern is not intended for children.
Materials:
- Bernat chunky in cream (or something similar)
- 5mm crochet hook
- yarn needle
- safety eyes (I don't have the package, but they are 3/4 inch wide)
- cream coloured felt
- Method of choice for adding colour (ie: oil pastels, or eye shadow, or pencil crayons - I used pastels)
- Red yarn for scarf if you choose to crochet one. I didn't have red yarn, so I just cut some fabric.
- polyester filling
- hot glue gun or fabric glue
Pattern:
R1: Ch 2, 6 sc in second chain from hook
R2: Sc 2 in each sc around (12 sts)
R3: *Sc 1, 2 sc in next sc*, rep 6 times (18 stitches)
R4: *Sc 2, 2 sc in next sc*, rep 6 times (24 stitches)
R5: *Sc 3, 2 sc in next sc*, rep 6 times (30 stitches)
R6,7,8: sc around
Decrease rows:
R9: *Sc 3, sc2tog*, rep 6 times (24 stitches)
R10: *Sc2, sc2tog*, rep 6 times (18 stitches)
R11: Sc1, sc2tog*, rep 6 times (12 stitches)
Repeat rows 3-11 4 more times. This creates the ridges in his wormy body.
After last decrease row, break yarn, leaving a very long tail for the closing up the top of the head which you will do later.
Place safety eyes as pictured:
In order to make the upper and lower lids, grab any ol' paper lying around and trace the contours of the eyes, as pictured, and then trace your eyelid pattern onto the cream-coloured felt and cut four out.
With your colouring medium of choice, add a little shading:
For the mouth (make two)
R1: Ch 4
R2: Sc 1, sc 2 in next two stitches, sc 1 (6 stitches)
Using colour medium of choice, add a little colour to the inside of mouth. Sew to face as pictured:
For cheeks and chin (make 3)
R1: Ch 2, 6 sc in second chain from hook.
R2: Sc around (six stitches)
Weave in the slip knot tail and leave the end tail long for sewing to the face as pictured:
Now it's time to stuff the little guy! Don't over stuff because you want him to be bendable and squishy (I've never even heard of a non-squishy worm...have you?)
After that, take some wire the length of the little guy (curl the ends so that they don't poke through) and push it all the way to the tail. This is what makes him posable. He should look like this:
Now curl that wire down and start to seal him up!
The last decrease is simply to Sc2tog all the way around until he closes up and then break yarn and weave in the ends.
Now the fun begins! Adding his adorable blue fur and bringing him to life! Add the fur just as you would the fringe of a scarf. I use three strands for each tuft and then they aren't too bulky. Use the pics below as an idea of how to add the tufts and colour his back. Do this however you like. I used pastels, but do whatever works for you. I've been given some really great suggestions by other craftsters, so have a look back at some of the comments if you would like inspiration.
For the scarf, you can knit one, crochet one, or just use some red fabric scraps from your stash!
