Help me turn my son into a beanstalk!

My 4 1/2 y.o. is the beanstalk in the school play.  I'd like to make a nice basic costume that can be used year after year in the classroom.  I'm going to start with a simple, green jump-suit.  I'd love suggestions for adding leaves and vines.  (I'm working on the cheap, here!  )

I kind of like the idea of making a beanstalk and wrapping it around him. I think you could pretty easily make a long green tube that tapers to a point at each end. It doesnt have to be very thick and then stuff it, add some leaves, maybe a bird or butterfly and pin it to his suit.

I think a green jumpsuit is a great start! For the viney bits, how about nylons dyed green, stuffed with batting or newspaper and wrapped around him? Or if you have plenty of fabric leftover from the jumpsuit, you could just make tubes out of it. I think it'd look great starting around one leg, coming around his torso a couple of times, up the back of his head, maybe with some wire in it to make it stick out above his face with a little facsimile of a bean flower on the end. You can make some fabric leaves to put on the vine here and there just by sandwiching some interfacing between two pieces of green fabric and do some fancy leaf-vein-like quilting, kind of like this tute:

You could probably make the leaves single-layered just by using a stiff acrylic felt.

Great suggestions!  Thank you!  I like the idea of wrapping a vine around the suit.  Hadn't thought of that.
