Details of swap:

Maybe you've seen it at a Renaissance fair with some dude wearing chainmaille armor, maybe you've seen some lady wandering around with some lovely scalemaille earrings or a byzantine bracelet, maybe you have absolutely no clue what I'm talking about but would like to try your hand at a new craft!

For The Great Chainmaille Swap, we will be learning a new craft, or improving on one we already know. For this swap, you may use any combo of jump rings, beads/embellishments, wire, scales, etc. While doing a basic 1-1-1-1-1 is acceptable, it would be great if you took the time to learn at least one weave Wink

This is a FOUR point swap, and we will have all summer to craft due to a mixture of people's schedules and also the fact that chainmaille usually takes a bit of time to pick up and get used to. Extras are allowed, but not required. If you want to do more than four points, I'd recommend talking to your partner to see if they want to do the same, but if you just want to spoil them, go for it.

Point system:

By Points
Large= 3 points
Medium=2 points
Small=1 point

By Time
-Large = 3 or more hours
-Medium = 2 or more hours
-Small = 2 or less hours

By Size
-Large = A shawl, a shirt, a skirt, a set of jewelry with four to five items, a purse
-Medium = one single necklace or bracelet, a scarf
-Small = Earrings, stickers, wallets, pouches, bookmarks

By Price
-Large = $30 or more
-Medium = $10-$30 dollars
-Small = $10 or less

I'm asking that you post in the thread once per week, at least once sign ups are closed, okay? Smiley If you are going on vacation/out of town/to your own funeral/etc, please let me know. I'd really appreciate it to know you're still alive (unless you PM me saying you're attending your own funeral, that might worry and confuse me).

For the sake of my sanity, please PM me with the following subjects:

Chainmaille Swap - Questionnaire
Chainmaille Swap - Sent
Chainmaille Swap - Received
Chainmaille Swap - Question
Chainmaille Swap - Other

If you want to participate, information to send to organizer:

QUESTIONNAIRE TO ANSWER:
Name of swap
Craftster username
Email address
Your real name
Mailing address including the country
Would you be willing to ship to an address outside your own country?
Confirm that are at least 16 years old or, if not, that you have moderator approval(YES/NO)

Are you new to chainmaille?
If you're not new to chainmaille, how long have you been doing it?
Favorite colors?
Least favorite colors?

Do you have any allergies or aversions? (Metal related ones are especially important to be noted)
If you do have metal allergies, how bad are they? (In some cases someone with slight allergies, things like aluminum, copper, surgical steel, etc are fine, but in other cases, people who are mega allergic may need niobium because it's hypoallergenic)
Do you have any allergens at your home?
Do you have any favorite metals?
Do you dislike any metals?

Is there anything specific you might like?
Is there anything you don't want?

Do you agree to post once a week once sign ups are closed?
Can you take pictures in the event you need to post for your partner? (it's okay if you cant)

Is there anything else you'd like me to know?

HELPFUL LINKS AND OTHER SHENANIGANS

Helpful hints:

You're going to need two pairs of pliers, if you have larger rings, larger pliers work better.
If you have anodized metal, toothless pliers are recommended, but not required.
You can buy pliers just about anywhere.
European 4-1 is a good weave to learn in the beginning. It's simple but nice and makes it easier to learn other weaves (at least in my experience).
22g+ is good wire for making your own earring hooks.
With wire and a pair of round nosed pliers, you can make your own charms and earring hooks.
It's good to have a second pair of pliers when making earring hooks to hold onto it.
You can get wire, pliers, etc at most hardware stores.
You can find bags of clasps, jump rings, etc at places like Walmart, JoAnns, etc, and they do come in handy, but they generally don't have as much of a variety as you can get from an actual chainmaille supplier. (I buy my supplies from The Ring Lord, but I'm looking into finding a good US supplier)
If you have wire, wire cutters, and a dowel, you can make your own rings, which can end up being cheaper than buying them sometimes.

Man, I would LOVE to be part of this, but from memory, chain mail is heavy as all get out, and I wouldn't want anyone having to post it to Australia. (Nor for that matter would I want to post some to America)

But I shall stalk the gallery with a wistful eye. (heh, pun not intended, but applicable)

Actually, if you and a partner both used aluminum / anodized aluminum, you could probably mail it in a padded envelope. Aluminum is VERY light. Steel is stronger but much heavier. Bronze is like so-so ish. Etc. I mainly make chainmaille jewelry, and I try to make it as light and comfortable as possible.

But I can totally understand the Australia thing (no offense)

I'm already kinda excited for the gallery LOL XD It ought to be interesting.

Lol. I used to do medieval reenactment. So I never even thought of using aluminium. But yeah, parcels here start at around $10, and that's under 250g.
You'll all have to make lots of pretties for me to look at to make up for it Wink

Do you make your own rings or do you buy them already made? This swap looks so fun, but I am moving across the country this summer so I don't know where my address will be!

I'll have to wait until I get feedback from one of my other swaps to join this one. I've been doing chain mail for about 8 years, and have done everything from armor to jewelry. I normally make my own links for the armor instead of buying them, but for most of my recent jewelry projects I've been using jump rings.
