Which stitch encyclopedia are you using jemimah?

(Sorry I didn't see your question for a few days!)  I have lots of embroidery books and mags, new and vintage, but the one I use most for crewel stitchery is my trusty old copy of Marion Nichols - very informative and helpful, but not a fancy book. It's an older book, so it's all line drawings and instructions rather than photos.

For people who find colour photos easier to follow, anything put out by Inspirations is very good - they have excellent step-by-steps, and I use their books and mags frequently. I often recommend their A-Z books, though they are not the cheapest. They would probably be a bit more "beginner-friendly" than Marion Nichols.

I don't have Mary Thomas, but I looked it up online - it looks fab! Never seen it in the shops here Sad
