Just thought I'd share this for rubber stampers and mixed media folks who like to carve their own rubber stamps.

I was at Lowe's this morning getting a new drain pipe for my sink, and I saw this red rubber that they use in plumbing repairs - it was around a dollar for a piece about 5 by 6 inches that looks just like what you find on rubber stamps. So I bought one. I figure if it works, even if it doesn't last forever, it should work for at least a few projects. At that price, one can afford to experiment!

Also, in the paint department, I snitched a bundle of paint swatch cards. Some of them were as big as 3 x 5 and could be used in a postcard exchange. Fun!

Share your hardware store finds of cool texturing tools, collage material, wire, glues, whatever!  Cheesy

Nice - let us know if that red rubber can carve or what you do w/it.

Will do! It will need traditional cushion mount under it, I'm thinking. The thickness is a little thicker - about 3/16" maybe - than the thickness of the red rubber on a premade stamp. But then again, I'm thinking of the rubber around the image, not what will be taken away from carving.

Also it depends if I'm using the stamp and carving a "negative space" design into it, or doing a "positive" image and removing most of the rubber around the image (say, an apple).

I'll get back to you soon!

The hardware store is a goldmine, especially since it is usually much cheaper than specialty shops. They have small trial size cans of interior and exterior paint now, so if you have tiny projects you can use really high quality paints for about $4-8. Also look for decorative brads, cabinet parts, texturizing material(there is a drywall mesh that is exactly the same thing as craft mesh and it's outrageously cheap). It's also a good place to find adhesives, tape, drafting supplies, cleaners and polishers, containers, and so many more things.

The wire section is a lot of fun.
