I've always been drawn to the unfinished birdhouses at Michaels, but I'm not really a bird person and never had another use for one. When I saw the log cabin, it suddenly hit me: Little Peg zombie chicken House on the Prairie!

I had a friend use a table saw to cut the birdhouse in half (he took the chimney off so it'd be easier to saw, and I forgot to get it back from him. D'oh!).

Then I stained the house, but I wasn't thinking about all the glue that had been slopped on during the manufacturing of the house, and of course the stain doesn't penetrate the glue, so it ended up looking rather uneven in areas. I added a handle, hinges, a latch, and a fireplace.

With some miscellaneous trim and popsicle sticks, I made a table. I had some wooden bowls and bottles left over from another project.

I'm giving this to a friend's daughter, and I want it to be travel-able, so I made a bag to keep everything from rolling out the front door.

Thanks for looking!

Holy crackers this is adorable! I've seen those little houses and never once thought of hinges so it could be opened up and played with. Genius!

What a sweet and wonderful alternative to all the cheap, plastic, crappy toys that are sold everywhere! (and that break immediately) And I eat that you made it portable! Well done!

I eat that feeling that comes with, "Meh, I can't use that thing. <lightbulb> OH...WAIT.  Yes I can!"  Good for you!  It's a great project.  Also, I really like the variation in the stain in the spots where there was glue.  I think it adds authenticity.

Thank you, everyone! I forgot to mention one thing: In order to hinge the wall where I did, I had to notch the base and the roof a little:

I just eyeballed it and used a hand saw.

I'm really excited about the possibilities with the other kinds of unfinished birdhouses they have. Lighthouse, rocket, Taj Mahal, etc.

It is better to have crafted and failed then never to have crafted at all.
Yes, I am stalking the Toys and Playthings board. Thanks for noticing!
I'm cheating on Craftster with Pinterest. It's ok though. There's overlap.

What a lovely idea!  I would have loved to play with this when I was a little girl.
