When you reduce a cane, don't roll it!  You'll distort the design.  Instead, you pinch it down, like this: http://www.polymerclaycentral.com/cane_wrap.html

sweetpetunia, you can also reduce canes by pulling them, as well as pressing on the sides, rolling over them if square, etc.
