My daughter loved the Totoro shoes I painted for x-mas and wanted a pair of her own. She requested Ponyo and thus these were born.  I painted her favorite scene from the movie on her converses. She wears these almost everyday now. Nothing makes a mommy happier than having happy kids, especially when they're happy to show off their custom made shoes.

I painted this while on vacation with my hubby over spring break. I drew out the image and inked it with a sharpie while watching Get Shorty (a movie the Hubs had never scene-bogus for someone who loves Travolta). Then I painted them the following day while watching From Paris with Love (the new Travolta movie). So a total of maybe 3.5 hours. Not too bad for custom shoes.

Painting shoes is very addicting. I just wish I had more time. Come summer I'm going to run out of shoes to paint. lol.

Any comments/questions are always welcome. Thanks all.

Wow, I feel so special. That made my evening

I use acrylics, but you need to make sure they are suitable for fabric. Otherwise they don't bond with the fabric. I also seal all my shoes since I live in a rainy state. My daughter has put these to the test by caking them in mud and jumping in mud puddles...they look the same as they did when the painting was new. Hooray for sealants. lol.

So coooool!! I've been wanting to try to do something to some shoes! This looks like a winner for me to gift to my sister.  She loves converse type shoes and my artwork, so I should probably marry those together for her.  Questions...what is the sealant that you use?  Thank you for sharing!

I used a spray sealant in can that says its for sealing acrylic paints that came from Aaron Brothers ( store thats no longer in business in my area). You can probably get something simular at jo-anns or micheals.  There's probably a better sealant to use for this but this one has worked well for me thus far. I have heard that spray sealants can turn yellowy after a while. I haven't seen this happen on our shoes, but its something to consider. Also I guess the spray cans can be sticky, which mine is for about 12 hours. I usually just spray it in the garage and then leave the shoes out there over night. By morning, they seem fine.  I hope that helps.
