Rockin' the baubles all around town...

I had an epiphany in Joann's a couple weeks back when I came across a 9" remnant of pre-smocked material.  At .35-.55 PER INCH Shocked I figured 50% off was a pretty damn good deal if I was going to try something out without putting out too much cash.  I picked it up and wandered around the store a while, then it hit me when I arrived at the batiks section....smocked back apron top in teals and aquas!  Well, if it has a closed in back, it's not actually an apron top anymore...soooo.... yeah Tongue  I had a vision in my head, and as I assembled it and tried it on, it morphed into something a little different.

A smocked-back tank top with fly-away back!

I did pleating in the front, repeated the 3 prints all around the base, and even did 3 strips when making the straps.  I could have gone with only the 2 prints together as well (you can see it on the back side in the pic of the crossed straps).  I love the look, the pleating really does camo a tummy pretty well Smiley

This is a tunic length, and because of that fact as well as it being made out of quilter's batiks, it sat funny at the rear end.  I have, ahem, a large ASSet, so....this went from being a completely closed back tank top to a flyaway back to free my cheeks from the shackles of bunchy fabric.  Another modification was a tucking into a V neck, as I inadvertently made the bust area too wide between the straps, so it gapped like crazy.  I did a pleating or accordian look and sewed it down with matching thread.

Observe....

Happy me!!

All in all, I will figure out a way to use the smocking AND a closed back on a tank at some point.  Probably something that isn't as stiff of a fabric and flows better would not bunch up.

C&C Welcome!

Great job! It looks flattering, and, yes, COOL. I am plotting as many all-cotton strategies as I can in anticipation of a hot summer.  Cool

Thanks so much!  I actually have a tute up for a similar top, my tie-back apron top if you wanna have a look Smiley  Most of the steps to make it vs making something like this are about the same!
