I've been wanting to try this tutorial for a while: http://earthandliving.blogspot.com/2008/08/viking-shoes-tutorial-sort-of.html It's a great tutorial!

This is how they turned out

Not too bad for my first go...just need to find some thicker leather for a more sturdy pair. These make great slippers though, so comfy and great for pottering around the garden! Cheesy

Are they comfortable? Are they slippery?
They are sooo comfy! I've not taken them off since I finished them! Cheesy

They're less slippery than I though they'd be. Seem pretty safe so far!

Phizzy, those are awesome!  Thanks for posting the link.  I think Lana would love to have some.  She has been doing those leather laceup projects recently so I know she'd really be into this.  Now to round up some leather!!

Very nice! I've seen shoes at the renfair like that and I've always wanted to give them a try, so thanks for the link too! I think I might try a mock up in felt first to get the size right before hacking away at the leather.

Thanks! I used some upholstery leather (thinner than they used), but it was stuff I had in my stash that my uncle gave me. A furniture store was throwing some offcuts out so he saved the bigger pieces for me.

There's a shoe repair shop I want to ask about leather in because I think they might be able to get me thicker pieces. Worth a try anyway!

Pretty awesome! My son has some toddler shoes like this.  We actually have a shoe store in town that will cut you custom sole leather for creating your own shoes, so maybe you can find a place to do that, and then sew the leather into the softer uppers?

You are psychic!  I just threw out my house shoes because I could not longer re-vamp them.  I also just opened a box of clothes from my teen years and wished I could think of something to do with a leather jacket I loved!  Whoop!

I'm jealous....really.  Do you think they would do mail order?

Thanks! I hope you do all try them, they're fairly straightforward to make and once you have one drawn out it's easy to trace for the second. And then just a few more shoes... Cheesy
