so one of my favorite things to do is to buy old/ugly/poorly painted/unwanted ceramics and figurines from thrift shops and whatnot and give them a new coat of paint and a new lease on life! here's a horse i did....

thanks for looking! Grin

That is totally awesome! The two sides being so different is a really interesting twist.
I can't believe no one else has commented on it.

Wow!  Grin This is amazing. Great colors and designs, especially the "deadness" of it. I like that the finish , since it's not shiny,it doesn't even remotely remind me of porcelain. Truly recycling at it's best... and even though I'm not usually as horse-crazy as befitting a female, I would certainly give it a new home, if it hadn't already confused two other people by yelling at them to come take it  Grin

Really cool project! Very old school with the roses and swallows, but such a modern use of the themes.

Very cool. What kind of paint did you use? Did you prime it first?

thanks again for all the love, y'all! as for paints, they are just standard little squeeze bottles of cheapo acrylics like you get for a buck-fifty at wally world in the craft section. no, i generally don't prime before i paint! HOWEVER! it is important to note that i always buy unfinished bisque/porcelain/resin to work with. if it has a shiny glaze on it, you can pack your paints up and use it for target practice, or turn it into a paperweight, cause you're never gonna get paint to stick to it! resin is tricky cause it is not porous (see the holy family i posted) so yeah, hitting it with a fine sandpaper to make the surface a bit "toothy" is a big help. otherwise, look for figurines in bisque that are either unpainted or only painted with acrylics already. i prefer them au naturel when i can get them....  this horsey, for instance, came home with me cause no one at the ceramics shop wanted him because he has a chip out of his ear. (look close at the white ear - see that divot? Cheesy ) and count on doing multiple coats! i'd say that's the main trick to getting the solid rich colors is patience. i generally apply 2 to 6 coats of my base colors. once i get them nice and solid, i'll do one or two coats on the details and embellishments!

anyways, thanks again, and if y'all have any other questions, shoot!  Cheesy

I love this! awesome job on the repaint. I used to like to do this as well, except my boyfriend kept "rescuing" my projects from me (- he liked the originals and therefor wouldn't let me repaint them-)

thanks all! no sealant - acrylics give a nice wipeable surface and on the whole don't really need to be sealed - on the other hand, when i paint on a board or something the finish usually seems much more porous, and i tend to hit it with a couple coats of spray on poly

cheapo all the way.... most of my brushes are middle of the line hobby lobby deals..... i like the slightly firm yet flexible yellow or white or sable colored synthetic brushes.... not the stiff dry white bristles and not the super soft dark brown ones, something in between...

Nice, I love to paint, but always have problems with really minute details. I usually buy natural fiber brushes, but I might have to try out some synthetics.

I spotted your horse a while ago on google and I didn't think I'd come across it again.  I'm new to craftster that's why my comment is so late but I have to say i loooooooove this horse and I looooooove your holy family.  I can't describe how much.  I think I'm a little bit jealous too, I'm not sure. They are some of the most beautiful things I've ever seen.  You are extremely talented.  I hope you do something related to this as your job, if not, you are wasted.

Cheesy aww, thank you so much!!! Cheesy you're too sweet..... my work is kinda related - i'm a tattoo artist. and thanks to dotd becoming increasingly popular i do get to do a sweet themed piece from time to time, which is awesome. sometimes i do daydream about running away from it all to become a painter, tho.....
