I was very lucky to be partnered with the one-and-only onegroovyday for the Diptych Round of the Hoopla swap Smiley We had an awesome time, and I'm sure many of you have seen the FANTASTIC Starry Night Tardis she created for me!

Well, I knew I had to make her something very special! OGD loves birds and trees, so this is what I made:-

I worked from a picture to get some of the branch/leaf shapes, but all the rest was pretty much freehand. It's stitched on linen/linen blend, with some cotton and silk applique, the wing and many of the leaves wired, and many different stitches (feel free to ask if there's a specific one that you want to know what it is).

I looked very hard for a teeny tiny hoop for the birdie to hold, but with no luck. But then I thought, birdies can't use screw hoops anyway - birdies don't have thumbs! So I made it out of wired leaves, and I think it turned out pretty well that way Smiley

It was a lot of fun to make, and onegroovyday really likes it too! Yay! Cheesy

I really like this, jemimah. Well done!

The depth and texture of this piece is amazing. I love how you lifted the leafs and the bird's wing from the 'hooped' fabric. And the stitches on the bird's 'feathers' look incredible.

Just lovely Smiley!

Gorgeous.  Are the leaves on linen too or is it the wiring that makes them stand up like that?

Amazing work!

Thank you! Smiley

kaz814, the leaves are made with cotton fabric attached to a wire stem, then almost completely covered with stitching (buttonhole + Croatian). The wire goes right up the middle of the leaf, and also through to the back of the fabric, so they can be re-positioned (within reason, if you fiddle with them too much you could break the fine wire), and they will stay where you put them.

This is so great! I, too, am in love with birds and trees. This is perfect and I'm so jealous!

it looks great here.... and looks AMAZING in person....the detail is unreal, and the little hoop that the bird is holding is just perfect!!...... it really is a work of art and I am honored to say its MINE..... I think that both jemimah and I were 'pushed' (in a good way)to create a spectacular hoop having eachother as partners..... a personal challenge for both of us.... and it paid off!!

(hey, jemimah.... WE ROCK.... Wink)
