Thanks for the explanation fantasticmio...I tried to google and got patterns that don't make a lot of sense to me (I've only ever done very basic crochet).

I'm enchanted by this beautiful piece.  It's functional.  It's art.  It's been added to my list of 50 things to make/do/learn this year.  I just reserved a copy of "Crochet master class : lessons and projects from today's top crocheters" byJean Leinhauser and Rita Weiss.  Hopefully that's the book you were talking about...  ;-D
