Overlay Crochet motif

Today I learned how to do Overlay Crochet!



This is only my first attempt (and holy moly, following the pattern was somewhat gruelling), but I think I've got the basics down.

Basically, the trick is to mostly work into the back loop only, so that when you go to make the stitches over the the front of the piece, you can work them into the exposed front loops.  (You also sometimes do front post stitches).

It makes a very cushy fabric.  I haven't decided what to do with this yet.  Despite the fact that it has a LOT of single crochets in it, it's still pretty stretchy.

One of my guild members has made this and made it the centre of a really neat-looking blanket.  So... I might do that. lol

ETA: I used a friend's pattern to make this, referring extensively to the finished version my friend had made.  I don't have the pattern right now and am not sure where you would get it.  There is a bit of an over-view of this technique in the book Crochet Master Class.  I'm on the prowl for more patterns like this and will share my sources when I find them!  In the mean time, try Googling "overlay crochet"!

ETA2: once I get a better feel for this technique I'm going to try to post a bit of a tutorial for it.  At this point, I'm not sure how that would work, but I'm confident that I'll be able to figure it out. lol
