Need some help figuring out how to do this...

Ok, hopefully I can try to explain myself here.  I want to make a canvas bag that is rectangular (almost like a messenger bag, but without the flap) with an adjustable strap.  I want to top to be flat with a zipper.  Like, picture a 3 dimensional rectangle (6 sides) and the top is split by a zipper.  I have no idea how to do a zipper like that!!  I guess it's kind of like a recessed zipper, but without being recessed, if that makes any sense.  I know how to do a zippered bag, but not anything that has a depth like that.  Has anyone ever seen anything like this or know what it is called?  Any help would be appreciated!!

Okay, let me preface this by saying I'm scared of zippers and have never used one. 

BUT, I think I understand how to put a zipper in ... can you sew two pieces of fabric to either side of the zipper to make up the top?

Does that make sense?

yes, i know how to do that part.  I just can't figure out how to attach those pieces to the lining and outer part of the bag.

OH. Sorry.  Okay, what I would do would be to make a 'lining' for the top part that's separate - attach it with the outside fabric all at once. Then I'd insert the real lining into the outer fabric - like you're going to topstitch all around the edge, but also insert the lining/top of the zipper portion between the bag's lining and outer fabric.  Then topstitch all around.

Does that make sense?  I'd love to hear what others say, though.

Now I want to go find a pattern to see how others do it.

If you haven't seen her stuff, you should take the time to look thru the things she's made - she's taught a lot of us a thing or 2. I hope this is what you're looking for.

I don't like doing those recessed zippers - too floopy and and fabric bunches up on the sides, which my machine won't sew through very well. I found my own way, and it's easy and it works great!
