On of our local channels has aired a thing about emergency kits and having them ready so you could evacuate your house in 10 minutes.  I'm updating my kit and was wanting to add some homemade things to it, like colorful bandanas to cover your mouth/nose or for use as bandages or hankies.  Maybe make some laminated checklists  or binders of emergency tips for our partners.

Is ther any interest in doing a swap to help us get our emergency/72-hour kits together?  With all of the earthquake activity going on I know there's been a lot more talk about them.  Also, it's tornado season in tornado alley, then there's hurricane season on the eastern side of the states.

I was thinking of opening it up for sign ups in May and sendouts mid June.

Do you have any links to 'what should be in an emergency kit' so we can see what sorts of other things go in it?  That might help to generate some more crafty ideas!  That being said, I might be up for this, depending on timing.

I was thinking I needed to add some links as I nodded off to sleep lastnight.  Here are a couple...

Books for further emergency info...

Here's a link to a site selling preparedness kits to give you an idea of some things that should be in a kit

Ideas of possible things to include in this swap...
Thrifted backpack - something to hold an individuals personal belongings.  Could be from a thrift store or garage sale.
Zippered bags - to organize bathroom stuff, meds, socks/underware, batteries/flashlights, etc.
Handmade notecards with games kids can play that don't require much in the way of equipment
Binder with emergency tips & checklists with dates things were last updated, knot tying page
Scarves, hats, gloves
Decorated journals - great to have paper so you can leave notes to loved ones and neighbors so you can keep track of each other
Pillows - travel size or maybe just pillow covers so your partner could add their own throws
Recipe cards for meals made from cans, the proper ratio of bleach to water to be sure your water's clean, homemade staples like toothpaste
Sewing kit
Anything travel sized or related as your kit should be something you can take with you.

Extra things you may have laying around - scissors, flashlight, rubber/latex/nitrile gloves (I picked up 3 boxes at a garage sale last year), hand warmers, whistles, deck of cards or dice
