My 5-year-old nephew's i-spy, a monster.

I googled "coloring pages" and found the little monster's head, then drew in the rest. The feet didn't come out like I drew them no matter how many times I used the seam ripper, so I just quit while I still had fabric.

The picture list of stuff for him to find, laminated in 10ml laminate:

I had to learn to learn to use MS Paint to clean up the photographs of each item...this took longer than any other part except collecting all the little doo-dads!

The word list of stuff to find, since my nephew is beginning to read:

Aannnnd, because I was a writing teacher, I made a list of "guided play" questions his dad can ask him to develop language and thinking skills:

I've been making I-spy bags recently, but mine are the more traditonal square kind. This bag s**ts on mine, it's great.

Some of thoes items look quite tricky to find, but that is a good thing for a 5 year old. Also did you put in the photos shown or objects that he associated with those people. I love the guided play questions.

I'm bookmarking this for when my girls are a bit older. Just finding the huge rubber duck is enough for then right now.

This Rocks!

Wow, thanks, y'all. I hope he likes it and will play with it!

Sarad, thanks. I thought of a little something to try today to make the legs a little better, then I might topstitch the whole outline. Maybe!

About the guided play:
When I was just out of grad school my job was to administer IQ tests to kids, and the guided questions kind of lead that way: find five things that are ___ (alive? green? have feet?)   You don't have to have an i-spy; you might try it with stuff around your house or while traveling. (We still play that kind of word games while traveling only now they come up with the challenge. They're 15 and 16 and now it's ME having to "put my thinking cap on!")

Not just squares any more:
Look here for how I came up with the idea to move away from a square. I was searching for an idea of how many objects should be in there for a 5 year old, and...whoa, huh?! I have my second one ready to sew; it's a giraffe head, since the child loves giraffes! (She's only 2, so she has 30 objects. Bry's monster has 49, plus some challenges.) I googled "coloring pages" just for inspiration. Here's the page I modified.

About the objects inside:
I collected junk for about 2 years with an i-spy with this nephew in the back of my mind. When it came time to put this first one together, I tried to pick things Bry could relate to--they have a cat, he loves basketball, plays soccer, etc. The rest are just things. The people in the pictures are best described on the guided play card: "Name 7 people who love you." (They're my family, his grandparents, his aunt, who all live far away.) Also hidden but not on the list as a challenge: the seven letters of his last name, each on a different card. My 16YO said that IF I ever make him another one (um, HA), I could put a photo on the card for an object I didn't include as a challenge: Which pictured item is NOT in the bag? Heheheheh...I picture him with scissors /i] at that point....

Thanks for the encouragement, everybody!
