How do I make this Nursing/Maternity/Cover/Poncho Thing?

I really want one of these but $60 seems a bit too rich for what looks like essentially a poncho made out of light jersey knit. Anybody want to venture a guess about how to make one? How much fabric I'd need? Basic shape and where the seams would go? I'm kinda blanking, it looks like it might be deceptively simple... What do you guys think? (crude drawings encouraged please! lol!)

To me it looks like a big rectangle with a neck hole!     No seams except a hem all the way around and binding on the neck.

It looks to me as though it's a piece of fabric with a neck hole and possibly (from that picture of her sitting down with the baby) some stitches by the wrist so that it stays on the arms.

These directions could be helpful on making the neckline of the above pattern with a knit Tips for a neat, round neck (scroll down)

In looking at the other fabric designs sometimes it looks like they put two seams on either side of the neckline with two other strips of fabric crossing the grain for that "4 way stretch" thing. It's a bit easier to see in this picture:

That one makes it look like its made from four pieces of fabric, two long for the sides and two shorter ones for the front and the back with a neckline sewed in the middle...

Thanks for the diagram, lol, makes me feel super dumb that I couldn't figure that out. I blame "pregnancy brain".  

Any suggestions on the proper fabrics for this? Looks light SUPER light weight knit, but rayon/cotton blend or... what do you think?

So I ordered two yards of 58" wide ITY stretch jersey knit, I'm hoping that will be light enough as well as stretchy enough, and provide enough fabric... I'll will absolutely post a link to my finished project when I'm done and let you know how it worked out.

Thanks for the idea, I'm about to make something like this for my best friend since she plans to breastfeed. She's due any day now and I'm going to see her for the first time since she started showing. =O

Wow, after seeing the pics you posted, I SO want to make one of these! Great idea! I love how it can be used as a BF cover and a baby carrier cover!

Did you end up making one? I'd love to see pics and know if you ran into any issues!
