I do believe this is my very first needlework post! Woo hoo! Please excuse the long winded intro... I just copied it from my blog post on this project.

Ok... so Chris Jericho is on Dancing with the Stars this season. I adore Chris Jericho. He's really funny. He's charismatic. He's from Winnipeg. If you haven't heard of Chris before you're probably not a professional wresting fan. He's the best in the world at what he does! He's the man of 1004 holds! He'll save us all! Y2J!

Chris' appearance on DwtS has spurred an awful lot of snobby comments about wrestling and wrestlers. The depth of hatred some people feel toward this form of entertainment (we all know it's entertainment right?) is both laughable and disturbing. Anyway, in an attempt to combat the negativity I've decided to profess my love for those men in tights through craft. Tongue

When I was a wee gal (in the days of the very first Wrestlemania) I was a big wrestling fan. I'm not a hard core follower now, I only catch a bit of it here and there, but I do find myself quickly sucked in. The crazy story lines, the good guys and baddest baddies, the costumes, faux fur, glitter, explosions, muscles and high flying action to boot... really, its the perfect source of crafting inspiration!

So I've spent the last week or so stitching up some of my favourite old time wrestlers...

Andre the Giant

Sgt. Slaughter

Macho Man Randy Savage

Jimmy "Superfly" Snuka

(excuse the wrinkles...) Iron Sheik

Big Show (I know, I know... he's not an old timey guy)

Stitching these guys has been a ton of fun. These are the first 'real' stitchy projects I've worked on and I'm sure I'll be doing more. Besides, I've got to get an homage to Jericho in somewhere (he did inspire this set of stitchery after all) ... and then there's Undertaker, he'd be fun to do... and maybe Kane... and ... oh, you get the idea Smiley

Okay - you are like my total soul mate!!!  I grew up on the old-school wrestling as well, and sucked my hubby into it when we first got together.  You have TOTALLY inspired me to get off me lazy bum and do similar works!   I'm off to search for Jeff hardy images now!  lol

Great job!

I grew up in the Tampa Bay area during the era of Gordon Solie -- my dad actually took us to a couple of matches at the "Sportatorium". I mostly remembered being thrilled just to be there... and that it was very loud.

Which is to say, I LOVE these.  And Andre is my absolute fave of these pieces.

But only because you didn't do Dusty Rhodes.  Cheesy

I think that is the greatest word I've ever heard in my life!  Cheesy

I think that Ric Flair would make an outstanding embroidery subject.

My bf is a professional wrestler...He loves Andre since he was a kid and gets weepy  eyed when Princess Bride is on (but you didn't hear that from me). These are awesome!! I can't even pick a favorite. I think I might have to make room on my favorites list and definitely wisting <3

This made me all nostalgic and I had to google and find out if the Sportatorium is still there.

It is...and isn't.  The building is still there, but now it's the home of "Linnie's Fashions."

That's just wrong.  Cheesy

Those are awesome! They made me a little nostalgic, so I looked up some of my favourites from when I was younger and... Yikes! Ricky & Robert (The Rock n' Roll Express) are not as hot as I remembered them. Do you remember GLOW? Gorgeous Ladies of Wrestling? Those would also make some neat subjects for embroidery...

My sister was TOTALLY into wrestling as a kid.  In fact, she got some wrestlers' autographs when they asked my dad for directions on the way to a show.

These are pretty fun.

I love Andre the Giant and The Iron Sheik!  Awesome!!

Rock 'n Roll Buck Zumhoff was one of my very faves, as was Bobbie Heenan in the weasel suit -- more ideas in case you decide to continue this awesome collection.  Oh, and one where Mean Gene is looking befuddled while standing between arguing opponents would be sweet too.

Great job!  I love them!!

ETA -- How could I forget Mad Dog Vachon and Baron von Raschke in my list of faves?!  You've got a lot of stitching ahead of you!  ;-)

Too much fun!
Your Andre is my fave.
I agree with the vote for Junkyard Dog, and add votes for George The Animal Steele (that back/shoulder hair would be great French Knot work!), and Rowdy Roddy Piper.
I stopped watching all wrestling back when I was 19 or 20, and a jacka$$ wrestler named Psycho Sid called me a fat bitch from the ring - and I was just sitting there in the front row minding my own biz!

Sweet.  I've never been a wrestling fan myself but my husband apparently used to watch wrestling ALOT when he was a kid, and in the last week has found a bunch of movies on netflix about wrestling and some about specific wrestlers.  The one he watched last night was about Chris Jericho which was great because I actually recognized some of your quotes in the beginning (man of 1004 holds- hilarious!).  Anyways, this is awesome, and I'm totally showing it to my husband when he gets home... which will probably result in me having to start stitching up some of our own soon Smiley  Thanks for sharing.
