Hello all! Right now I'm working on a Simplicity 2694 for my roommate, and there's an elastic guide as part of the pattern. Can anybody tell me if I'm supposed to cut the elastic that length when it's stretched or when it's relaxed? I cut it relaxed so I could make it smaller if necessary, but the pattern seems to be saying that it only goes along the back of the dress, so I'm not sure why it would be so long. Help?

It's kind of hard to tell from the pictures on google, but I assume the elastic is supposed to go across the back at the waist? In that case you should cut the elastic at the length it needs to be to achieve the fit around the waist you want. It's easier than it sounds. Basically you want to try on the dress (the elastic is usually one of the last things you do), and then just hold the elastic wherever it has to go, it helps to pin it at one end, and then stretch it until the waist is as tight as you want it. That way it's easy to make it as tight or as loose as you want it.

If you don't want to do it that way, or if you're making it for someone else, you should cut the elastic while it's relaxed. You're right, you can always make it shorter, but making it longer gets messy.
