This is adorable!  I'm going to be shearing my sheep soon and wanted to try felting.  Also need some bird houses!  I wonder if felting around a ball would work, and then cutting it off and sewing back together...

Yes, that would work! I was thinking that I would eventually have to cut mine open (if they get used) to clean them out and see if they could be reused for the next year. I was thinking of cutting a flap in the rear top and then sewing on elastic loops and buttons to get it back together ( so I could get in easily again if needed).

How lucky you are to have your own sheep! What breed do you have?

I made a wire sculpture around a ball and when I was through I just deflated the ball to get it out.

The bad news: There is no key to happiness.
The good news: It isn't locked.

O yeah! That's a good idea....I have one of those gertie balls to make hats and vases on. It deflates easily and can be re-inflated with a straw. I wonder if they make large ones?

whether the birds like it or not, it's an awesome take on wet felting over a balloon!  Grin

i wouldn't recommend trying to make something as large as a cat bed using a balloon. probably your best bet would be to flat felt pieces (like dragonflyducky said) leaving a bit of loose roving on the ends of each piece and then felt those together (maybe using the foam resist at this point to mold it into shape). you'd come out with a seamless piece which would still look like a "pod".

there's great tutorials here on the felting board for a wet felted vessel using the balloon technique and for other wet felting processes! http://www.craftster.org/forum/index.php?topic=140465.0

I might need to make one of these for my Mother-In-Law. She loves birdhouses. Thanks for the awesome idea!
