Just whipped this up. Let me know if it is clear or confusing or if you try to make it!
POINTDEXTER: A pencil-shaped scarf knit on 5 DPNs.
ingredients:
-small amounts of worsted weight pink, silver/grey, tan/brown and black yarn and 250+ yds of main pencil color…in my case yellow.
-waste yarn for cast on
-size 8DPNS or whatever size you want....really. gauge doesn't matter as long as your finished product isn't too stiff or holey.
-darning needle
BEGIN:
CO 40 sts using a provisional cast on and waste yarn(i like a crocheted cast-on myself)
ERASER:
with size 8 DPNS knit in pink yarn,in the round, in st st for 5”.
FERULE:
switch to grey/silver yarn.
knit 7 rows, purl 3 rows, knit 7 rows, purl 3 rows.
SHAFT:
NOTE:at this point I switched to 10.5 DPNS to account for the yarn change and also for the introduction of some ribbing. This might not be wholly necessary, but the particular yellow yarn I was using knit up better on the larger needles anyway. Use your judgment on needle size based on your own yarn. Obviously if you are using all one brand/fiber/weight you could probably stick to one size, but my yarns were kind of a grab bag.switch to MC. k7, p1. Repeat for INFINITY.
I highly suggest hiring someone as your “pencil un-twister” as this thing gets longer and more unruly.
Knit for desired length in pattern. I wanted my scarf to wrap around my neck once fully, so it's about 5-6'
POINT:
If you want to make you pencil look like it has been sharpened you can do a simple scallop shape using your tan color and the chart included. The chart is knitted between each p row and repeated all the way around the scarf.
(bullets are P stitches, white is yellow, black is tan)
If you hate charted knitting you can basically skip this, it just looks kind of cool.
knit one round plain in tan color.
make sure there are an even number of stitches on each needle when you begin.dec: knit last stitch from needle 4 and 1st stitch of needle 1 together. knit to last stitch on needle 2, ssk. knit to end of row.
knit three rows plain.
repeat decrease.
repeat until there are 24 st.
switch to black/charcoal color.
continue decreasing and knitting plain rows until there are 10 st left. Kitchener stitch together remaining stitches.
graft the provisional stitches as well.
wash, block and wear!
