Sock knitting
«
on:
March 20, 2011 02:39:07 AM »
I've been knitting for years, but only recently started pushing myself. I've been doing fair isle, intarsia, short rows (yay!) and all sorts of various stuffs, in addition to writing my own patterns.
But sock knitting?
Is there some secret to the technique? I loathe using DPNs, so I use magic loop for knitting in the round. Can someone recommend a step-by-step guide/tutorial for baby socks?
Thanks
Mini

Baby socks would be knit like other socks, just smaller. There's a sock class tutorial here -

I knit my socks 2 at a time on 1 circular needle. I used this book to get started and it was really helpful, albeit a little confusing in the beginning. I also used youtube a lot for reference.

I used the cometosilver site to learn to knit socks- it was by far the best tutorial I found. I love dpn's so it worked well for me, but I'm sure you could adapt it to magic loop. I used a worsted yarn and made a ridiculously large sock, but it was great for learning the techniques. Good luck!

I love knitted socks, I just loathe knitting them
I recently started a sock using a size 2 11inch circular. Just turned the heel and I feel like I could successfully transfer the work to DPNs (because its beginning with DNPs that makes me the most crazy!) but I am going to stick with the small circ. It's definitely an acquired taste knitting on sock circs.

I too learned to knit using this tutorial and a helpful and patient friend. I wanted to learn to knit two socks at one time toe up on one long circular needle but made the mistake in buying the size I needed rather than try learning on a larger size needle and yarn. So, I'm going to try it again but with a size 5 or 6 needle next...

My favourite knitting pattern for baby socks is this:
Co as many stitches as you need for used yarn, must be divisible by 6.
(k3, p3) around for 4 rounds
p1, (k3, p3), k last 2 sts for 4 rounds
p2, (k3, p3), k last st for 4 rounds
(p3, k3) arounds for 4 rounds
k1, (p3, k3), k last 2 sts for 4 rounds
k2, (p3, k3), k last st for 4 rounds
Knit until you reach desired length, then work tip of sock (sorry, I don't know the word for it in English).
You don't need to knit a heel, so it grows with baby's feet.

I love the sound of this pattern but I am clueless as to how many to cast on and how long to make it. (not having children of my own) These would be for gifts and no way to have the person measure baby's feet. Do you have some guidelines? estimates? thanks!

Unfortunately I can't help you with that. I made them as a gift, too. I cast on 42 sts, I think. I can't remember how long they were. They fitted a newborn.
But I bet there are more experienced knitters here that can help you.
