So I decided to giving Ampersand Pastelbord's (http://www.ampersandart.com/pastel.html) a shot. I was mostly interested in it for a couple reasons it can be used for colored pencil, acrylic painting, and pastels. I'm still researching using it as a platform for colored pencils and acrylics. (Apparently colored pencils can be varnished and possibly framed ...wait for it....without glass! GASP! Shocked I don't know if I would be so bold, but one can dream.) I decided to start with what the platform was designed for, pastels. I'm really happy with how it came out. It's 11x14 and I decided to title it "This Is My Happy Face"

Any comments are appreciated  Grin Kiss

Riechan and tcmatteson, I actually picked this photo because of the eye reflections. I know that might sound weird but I knew I would add blue into the reflections and I wanted to see how it would turn out. I also added blue and blue gray into the nose to balance it out.

Thank you jellybean89, not sure I would say incredible but I'm happy  Grin I think I'm getting closer to photo realism work so I think I'm aiming in the right direction. I know I'm a hard critic.  Smiley

When I opened this thread, I did so assuming that the photo on the main board was the picture that you painted from. Never in my wildest dreams did I think that was your work and not the 'before'. If this is your first time working with a new medium, I can only imagine what later projects will look like. That said, I'm not sure how much you can improve as this is already so absolutely amazing!

Thank you BeaG, itscribe, SunflowerSmiles, maxxev, and smallhold!

itscribe, I've worked with pastel's before this is the first pastel drawing that I've done on Ampersand's Pastelbord. I've come to love velour paper, especially for animal portraits. However, the Ampersand was pretty nice to work on. It's a tough choice!

I'm so sorry I haven't posted back, my internet connection was spotty for the last couple days!  Undecided

It really means a lot to have the support! I've been working hard to learn as much as I can about pastel to keep moving forward. I think it's important to never stop finding out new techniques and keep applying them to your own art. I still see some stuff now that I would change with this drawing, but I know that will help with my next drawing, so on and so on. It does make me really happy though Smiley

Wow!
Love the detail and the lighting, so realistic!
The board you worked on gives off a similar effect of velour paper, which is what I use. But I'm heavily assuming its not since you say this other board you use can also be used with colored pencils and acrylics and with velour paper this is basically impossible.
Amazing job on this!

A beautiful portrait!  Pastels always strike me as incredibly difficult, the few times I've tried have been a disaster (albeit a bright, colourful, powdery disaster, but a disaster nonetheless.)
My favourite bits (ok the bits I'm really jealous of) are the eyes and the nose.
