Last April I made a 7+ foot long cloud for my senior art show.  I was heart broken that I couldn't bring it home with me (it was too big) so I took all the fluff off of it and kept that.

Somehow (I can't quite remember where it came from) I got the idea to re-make the cloud, but much smaller, and as a lamp!
I got all my materials from a local hardware store, except for the outside "skin," which is stuffing from pillows.  This specific cloud has a home with my friend in New York.

Here is it off in normal lighting, on in low lighting, and on with no other light source.

It's not a very difficult project, but it is time consuming.  The longest and most tedious process is getting the "fluff" to stick to the wire "skeleton" that I shape into something that resembles a cloud.  This lamp has a low-watt nightlight bulb in it, but in the future I'm going to experiment with different types of lights and colors.  The light socket and switch is from a basic lamp wiring kit.
Sorry about being a little vague on how I made this lamp.  I'm trying to be a working artist, so my concepts and projects are my livelihood (one day, at least).  I wouldn't mind it if you wanted to try something similar, but please don't steal my idea for profit!

Thanks!

This is REALLY cool. It looks so realistic. Excellent work!

What is the "fluff" material, if you don't mind me asking?

It's literally the stuffing from pillows.  Somehow that makes it even more dreamy and romantic for me; the idea that someone else slept and dreamed on this material before I re-purposed it.

I couldn't stop staring at it...so neat...it is dreamy...I can only imagine how cool the seven foot one was...that would be the coolest thing to see it sprawled out on a ceiling or wall  Grin

This is so cute. It would look great with a blue light in it too, making it a rain cloud.

I agree, I would love one with a soft blue light in it! Oh, it would be wonderful to have several hanging from the ceiling.

Oh that is precious!  I could see that hanging on the wall above a baby's crib, as a soft night light.  Great job!  Smiley

I have actually seen a light fixture just like this with both a "moonlight" (a soft blue glow) and a daylight mode.  It was made in 2002 by a lighting designer in Seattle - so although yours is lovely as well, there are others out there being sold for profit.

southern flower:
Do you have anymore information about these fixtures?  I tried a search with no results to what you're referring to, and I'd love to see it.  People I've talked to and shown my work hadn't seen anything quite like it before, but I wouldn't be surprised if a similar (or even better) idea has popped up elsewhere.

The artists name was Ken Dunard - I googled it and he doesn't show it in his current Corflot portfolio ... but as I said it was almost ten years ago, and I believe he now does Industrial design.  I know it had LED lights in it because of the minimal amount of heat they give off... It had two very thin wires that supended it from the ceiling and it uplit blue and looked like moonlight behind the cloud and then could be switched to brighter white light that made it look like a cloud does when the sun shine thru.

In no way do I mean to belittle YOUR lovely accomplishment!! - I was jut a bit taken aback by your ending comment not to steal your idea for profit.  Intellectual property is a tricky, slippery slope - and I have always enjoyed Craftster for its sense of community and sharing of ideas, I guess because I had seen it before I felt offended for that artist (SORRY!)   *** I contacted Ken - he said his was just expirmentation and he never really liked it (GASP - I can think of soooo many people here who would take it!)  He said to check out studio italia designs they have some peices "nuvola".  I also saw a hideous version on Isuwannee.com  Sept 2009.

Enough said!  Great work!

This is such a great idea. If I ever have children I would love to hang this from the ceiling of their rooms, it would be adorable!
