short (14-18 inch) lengths of handwoven ribbon/trim are fairly fast.  If you feel like getting fancy add beads to the fringe ends (the cheap 'E' beads work fairly well)

working metallic threads into the ribbon is doable (like crochet metallic) BUT some of it has almost no 'give' and will cheerfully eat you hands while you work it.  Lesson leaned when doing a 6 yard length with black cotton and gold metallic, the gold did NOT want to give like the black did and when I got into rhythm wore a bloody hole in the side of the fingers I was parting weft with... it's lovely stuff but ouch..

Last year's was a burgundy shield w/a pen tip; this year's is a hand-painted swan symbol w/pearly beads.
