When I found this ovular canvas at the craft store, I knew I wanted to paint some sort of iconic-style portrait with a faux frame. I just wasn't sure of what at the time. Lately I've been interested in Mexican folk art, (I love the colors, the subjects, and the themes) so I decided on doing this dia de los muertos-inspired skull.

I used acrylic paints (I prefer oils, but acrylics are more house-friendly for me--mineral spirits make me woozy). I do really like the metallic gold acrylics, though! The photos don't really portray its shinyness. When I was done painting, I had the idea to use some fake gems I had left over from another project. I super glued them on the "frame," the hat flower, and the eyes. I decided to call this painting "In Limbo" because of the heaven and hell symbols on the right and left of the skull.

Overall, this was a fun project I think turned out pretty well. What do you think?

It's so beautiful! And I can't believe it's not a real frame! There's so much depth! I bought an oval canvas last month and you've given me inspiration Smiley
