The one time I tried it, I used an old wool/nylon single left on my bobbin after plying another yarn.  That seemed to work fine. So, I guess what I'm saying is, if you spin your own, you don't have to go out and spin it, you could just use your leftovers?  Although, I only did an oz, not sure I'd have had enough of that single to do much more....

That is helpful!  That would be a way to use up random leftovers, or to use a yarn that I ended up not liking.  I'm guessing the core has to be at least part wool to be grippy, is that right?

I haven't found that to be true...so far. I've used cotton crochet thread and a textured 2-ply cotton yarn (commercial) among other things. I wouldn't recommend anything too slippery though as it might increase frustration, lol!
