So I'm usually a lurker and I'm trying really hard to change that. I really love swapping and have noticed that maybe if I were more active on OTHER areas of the board I would enjoy the rest of Craftster more... I mean, uh-duh, that's why I'm here!!

Anyway -- I made this for the lovely AlmostDawn in round 4 of the hoopla swap where the theme was diptych hoops. I decided to go with this idea of a tall ship (an evil pirate ship, so it's really ok!) being dragged down by a giant octopus.
As this idea was festering I stumbled across a few... difficulties... 1) I'd never done a hoop that would stay in the hoop. How would I do the back so that I could have the two hoops stay attached?? 2) How can I get the tentacles to "stand" up? 1) I used the wonderful tutorial by onegroovyday for the backs doing the octopus head first and half of the ship then stitching the tentacles on and finishing the ship's background. There was a lot of flailing around... and many many pin pricks. But I'm clumsy like that. 2) I wove some wire into the tentacles to keep them up. It works pretty good when they are against a wall... hopefully it will work for AlmostDawn!
SO without further ado! My pictures!

the ship

details of the ship (even my dad said: "wow. you did this by hand?" for my third embroidery I think it looks pretty good.)

the octopus hoop

the bottom details

both of them together

more ship details and the tentacles dragging it down.
I also figured I'd so you my prototype... I always wanted to do the octopus out of felt, but when I mentioned that to my mom she said it would look better in fabric and why don't I do it that way... well... this is why...

I'm calling him Zombopus. Or Octobi depending on my mood.

He's creepy... and I left out a leg... oops... I swear I CAN sew.
Thanks for checking it out! <3
