I was totally inspired by http://www.craftster.org/forum/index.php?topic=367900.0 this awesome stool.  I wanted to make one for a swap but I couldn't find a log...I had some offers from a thousand miles away for logs (if I drove to get them) but instead I went to Michael's and found these cute little foot stools.  I thought they would be perfect and MUCH easier to ship. They were unfinished wood and their size make a perfect footstool or a child's stool.

First thing was to paint the base.

Then I took hotglue and attached foam around the edge of the top.  Then I filled in the center with foam.

Then I layed out my fabric and turned the stool upside down.  Using a staple gun I held the fabric taut and stapled every inch or so, pleating the fabric along the way.

Viola! You have a mushroom foot stool!
