Remembers when Polymer clay only came in white..

I've been so excited about this project. It's been in my head for awhile and I even sketched it out a few times before I started it.
Now to the beginning....
My Mom has been a Faberge egg artist for many years. I grew up watching her work on everything from Finch to Ostrich eggs(we lived on a bird "farm"). I've done some work in the past but never as extensive as this.
The "Dragon's Egg" is actually an Emu egg. They have the most beautiful natural blue color, that's what drew me to it.
The base.. well the base was a thorn in my side for awhile. I couldn't figure out what to use. I spent so much time going to craft stores, thrift stores, dollar stores, driving myself crazy when what I wanted was on my back porch! We had changed out a broken ceiling fan and my son set aside 1 of the glass shades for me in-case I wanted it for a craft project, he knows me so well.
Then I was off and running!
From the base up:
I used liquid polymer play tinted with yellow paint and painted the glass shade.
I made the flames with the skinner blend technique
The egg was hollow already but I cut the base a little wide for the light to come in
Cut out the little opening for the eye
I made the baby dragon's eye with "glow in the dark" polymer clay and a glass pebble that I painted with liquid polymer clay(So the eye glows when it's lit)
Then I had to attach it all together. I made a thick base between the egg and the shade to resemble black rock. I then added some loose stones I had in my craft room.
Liquid polymer clay attached the flames and everything else together. Added some painted flames on the inside of the shade for dimension. Used a light kit I had and viola! The "Dragon's Egg Light"

The humble beginnings:

It's so cool!  I really like it!  The detail is great and I love the eye.

...But...  Is anyone else bothered by the physics of this? A dragon with that big of an eye would not be able to fit into that egg.  Unless it's a TARDIS egg or Egg of Holding, it shouldn't be possible.  O.o  I can't stop thinking about that...

Lol I had pictured in my head a baby dragon with a huge head and a little body and the tail wrapped aound it crammed inside the egg. I had a drawn schematic for it but I can't find it anywhere! Sorry..

Very cool looking. Any chance you're a Harry Potter fan? It looks like the egg that Hagrid gets in the first book.

My mom has a friend with an Emu farm in AZ... But you can get them on ebay.. Just make sure the eggs are "blown"... I made the mistake a few years ago and ended up with dried up finch eggs

Wow, this is cool!  I think that the flames up the side look a bit like scary fire creeping plants - but still ace!

Thanks! I tried making the flames flat first but they didn't look right... Maybe they could be a fire plant? It is a dragon's egg..lol

Is there a farmer's market anywhere near you?  The market near me sells (empty) emu eggs for about $10.

That's really fun. It'd be supercool to have an egg artist for a mama ^_^. How fun that must have been to watch. Btw, that's an emu egg? Makes me wonder if the "ostrich" egg that my best friend was given and has cherished for years is actually an emu egg... because it looks JUST like that (without all the fun dragon business, of course). Are ostrich eggs ever dark blue-green, or is that just emus?

I have a few ostrich eggs they are a cream color and have a more pitted, glossy appearance.... I need to do something with them one day
