Right so I want to make these wings in time for my birthday party (it's going to be fancy dress) but I'm at a loss of how to do it except make the wire frame which my dad said he'd help with.

Any idea how I'd insert the feathers in and more importantly where can I buy a mass bulk of black feathers that look decent for relatively cheap?

I also don't want them that big nor the feathers dangling at the bottom but that general shape and idea.

(And if this is posted in the wrong place, please feel free to move it as I didn't know where to put it.)

Thanks. ^^

My mum said something about using black voile and then just atttaching a few feathers for effect.

Thanks anyway. ^^

There is no such thing as relatively cheap feathers for something that large... the huge feathers are terribly expensive, I think a dollar a piece where we've found them.

Good luck, the wings in the inspiring picture look amazing!

Not sure about the long bits at the bottom, but my mom made a great pair of regular wings by wrapping the wire frame in tulle and hot gluing the feathers in. The holes in the tulle allow you to stick the stem of the feather through the fabric without much effort and it looks great. Also I'm sure you could use something other than hot glue , and probably should as her fingers were quite burnt by the end. Good luck.

you can make very cool fake feathers by cutting out feather shapes on the straight grain of a stiff and shiny fabric such as heavy silk or poplin.  then pull threads from the long sides leaving only a middle line and all the horizontal threads.  i suppose even if you used a light weight fabric you could starch them after the pulling.  i did this with black silk and it was amazingly real looking and plus you don't have to victimize a bunch of birds.

Even fake feathers would work.  I just want something similar for my birthday party.

I'll try and keep you posted on the progress of them.  Smiley

i made some wings for halloween one year. mine weren't near as big as in that photo.
the way i did it was made a pattern for the shape of the wings and then traced it onto some cardboard. i might have been posterboard, but that seems too flimy i don't think i would have used it. i'm pretty sure i just found a big box or something lying around my garage.
there was also a smaller rectangle piece between the wings to connect them. my mom covered the cardboard with black fabric and sewed in some elastic "straps" to hold them on. you know to put your arms through and they just sit over your shoulders or whatnot like backpack straps would. i hot glued black feathers over both sides. i just got them in bags at the craft store, whatever was cheapest. i think i also used a black boa on the top to hide the where i glued on the last row of feathers (i started with the bottom point and worked up).
they stayed pretty well, but it was windy that night and i lost a few feathers. i didn't have anything stabilizing the wings to keep them straight either so they would flap around in the wind at the joints where they connected to that center piece haha. my fingers were all black from the dye in the feathers too. all in all it came out really well and i wore them a few times. i was pretty pleased. sorry i don't have a pic to show you i'm sure that description is pretty weak.

feathers are reasonably light.. I'm sure you could get away with bending some wire into the shape you want the wings to be, and then covering them with pantyhose (like for making fairy wings) and then just gluing the feathers to that.

you might be able to get chicken farmers to sell you feathers for cheap. Other than that, you're not gonna have much luck for finding them less than $1 a pop.

If you made some can you please post a picture.
I have been searching for some angel wings for my wall, but the only ones around are cheap looking.

Some of my favourite wings are from Victoria's Secret Fashion Show
