I hope chickens count as pets! we're picking up our new birds in about two weeks--they'll be about a day old, so they need a brooder box for a few weeks. We also have one very predatory cat, so here is the solution we came up with:


The lid locks and the wire openings allow for the heat lamp to shine through, but don't allow kitty access to a buffet of small, flightless peeps Smiley

Details on the blog, for anyone thinking "chicks" this spring!

Excellent idea. And the kitty shouldn't be able to tip it over either! I've had that happen and had some very wet upset chicks Smiley

Great job! We've also had good luck putting all the chicks in the cat carrier (but it really confuses the cat).

We picked up 8 adorable chicks!
For those who like chicken details:
2 Buff orpington hens
2 Wyandotte hens
2 Cinnamon Queen hens
2 Silkies (may be hens or roosters)
