I've recently started doing 'journal quilts' - little 5"x7" quilts to explore a technique or express something I've been thinking about.  After watching endless footage of the earthquake and tsunami in Japan I was inspired to make a journal quilt about it.  Here it is:

I'd actually come up with a technique a few months ago of soaking (the darker blue) fabric in salt water, then drying it to give it kind of a whitish crust and a stiff texture... I think it works well in the layering.  Although it's a bit hard to see in the picture.

What a beautiful idea. And your technique for the blue fabric sounds interesting.

Thanks.  Most of my regular quilts are just traditional patterns, so it's been good for me to explore the idea of quilt journals as an opportunity to just play and express something.
