They're a series of cardboard cogs joined together discreetly at the back with wire, and the cogs are embroidered between the teeth and the middles with really intricate threadwork. It doesn't come out very well in the photo, but the thread is shiny, too! And there are beads and tassels hanging off.

I was really surprised - it's so wonderful and so different. It's exactly my style and will look so great in my flat! I love clockwork Grin

Looking for a vintage magazine (1974 - 1978) that has a fabric nativity set w/ people and animals. An example: http://www.craftster.org/pictures/showphoto.php?photo=440861&ppuser=143144.

Here Teraspawn - this photo might be better... then again, maybe not. I messed around with colour settings to try and get a shot which showed off the thread

Cogs & Sprockets by Kitten Wrangler, on Flickr

graced - I see people do so much and have such fantastic ideas with their hooplas, that all I could think of that was new and different to do, was to completely change what the actual 'hoop' itself was Grin

I think of the two biggest cogs as the 'hoops'. There's chain stitch, blanket stitch and straight stitch going on amongst all the cogs, the two bottommost ones have designs made from wrapping the thread around the teeth in particular patterns.

I'm also pleased that Teraspawn likes what I did, and sees the effect I was after. I've never tried to do anything within a steampunk aesthetic before, but I've always had an interest in machinery and the suchlike, and I wanted to try and recreate actual 'machinery', rather than an image of machinery.

It's... amazing. Thank you for the words to help me "get" it and the extra picture.

I couldn't imagine what it was dont with.

Where on earth did you find cardboard cogs?! (For that matter, I don't know where one finds real ones!)

Ah, found the time to sit down and write about the seahorse hoops, so the detailed post about them is here, and if you want to take a look at huge closeup pics, they're on my Flickr Photostream

Thank you for the lovely compliments, everyone Smiley

I purchased a cheapo clock and dismantled it, but the gear pieces in there weren't anywhere near big enough. Then I had a random browse through a couple of cycling store looking at their gears, but good god they're expensive (!). Next resort was eBay, and voila! Cogs intended for scrapbooking & paperwork. Perfect. I just wish I'd purchased more. Got lots of cogly plans
