Hi I plan to knit a sweater with mock cable stitch. Does mock cable make it smaller? Like more scrunched up? Cuz the pattern is supposed to be for a smaller kid, but the kid I'm making it for is older. The pattern says co 62 sts. I knit a sweater in stockinette st. for the same kid and co less than 62 sts. Maybe the lady co more for a reason-- maybe the cabling makes it scrunched up. Does anyone have experience? All answers welcome! Thx  Grin

Did the patterns require you to use different size needles or yarn?  That would make a difference in the number of cast on stitches, so would shape and style of the sweaters.  Cables don't necessarily make the fabric smaller, it might pull in on the sides but this can be fixed with blocking or seaming.

The only way to know is cast on about 24 sts and work a couple inches in stockinette, then a couple more inches in the mock cable pattern. Then measure 2-3" across to see if there's more sts per inch in the mock cable than stockinette.
