Iíve been trying to figure out how to make this hat for my friend, I only crochet and canít figure out how to do it. If anyone has any ideas, or has seen a pattern for a similar hat, or even has an idea on what style hat it would be considered I would love any input, Iím kind of stumped!

That hat looks knitted, but you can copy it pretty closely in crochet. I can't see it too well, but you'd crochet around the post for the raised squares and in back loops for the ribbed bit at the bottom.

The only bit I'm not sure of it whether you'd have to make it as a flat piece of fabric and sew it into a round, or if you can work it from top down or bottom up as a round.

To me it looks like a beret worn lower. I LOVE these and they are very popular right now. Try searching in google for free crochet beret patterns and you should be able to find one similar in puff stitch maybe?
The "kingston" hat I make increases rounds from the crown and then you decrease by the hairline to fit around your head.
