Okay guys, here is another of my projects I completed in Florence,Italy. I spent 5 weeks in Florence studying art over the summer and during that time studied batik......somethin
g I DESPERATELY wanted to learn but finding a class is nearly impossible where I'm at. I married an incredible man who graciously paid for my trip....lucky girl that I am!
The first project I posted was a silk painting but this is a dip-died batik done on a silk scarf. The process was INCREDIBLY time intensive for this amount of detail, but oh so worth it! It is from a photo I took during a day trip to Venice.
Unfortunately, I was SO short on time that I didn't have the chance to do a second complete removal of the wax and rewaxing so that I could get the lamps pink and wound up having to make them purple (doing them during the cool color dies). The purple just wasn't right so when I got home I used fabric paint to paint the lamps. Then, like the other project I posted, I decided to quilt this batik (machine quilted) and added pink beads that I picked up while in Florence. If I remember correctly this scarf measures 34" x 34".
For those interested here is the order of dying I followed:
Wax out whites & dye in a light cream
Wax out light cream areas & areas where I planned to have blues & dye in yellow
Wax out lighter yellow areas and dye a darker yellow
Iron out ALL wax and dry clean
Wax out white & yellow areas and dye in a light blue
Wax out light green (allowing the blue over yellow areas gave me a beautiful green) & light blue areas & dye a darker blue
Wax out all areas except for lamp glass & dark areas and dye using magenta (over the blues it made a purple)
The dark brownish/purple areas are where ALL the colors mixed....these were left unwaxed during the entire process.
If I had the extra day to get the pinks in I would have kept the lamp glass covered in wax during this entire process. After doing the blues I would have had to iron out ALL the wax & have the fabric dry cleaned. Then I'd have to wax out all of the fabric except the lamp glass and dye in a pink. Then I would have waxed the lighter pink and dipped in a darker pink. Unfortunately I worked on this until the day before I came back to the US so I didn't have that extra time.
