I'm looking for some feedback on a crafting related business I'm building. I hope this is the right place to post this.

After talking with some friends and family at dinner one night, the topic of how difficult it is to use some of the big handmade goods online services are, we decided to see if we could improve on these issues by creating an easy to use online marketplace with some unique twists.

To continue getting feedback from crafters that we don't know personally, we put up a very basic bit of information explaining what Craftly is and how we see it working. http://craft.ly

To us, it seems like there's a large chunk of business being lost by crafters by not being able to taking advantage of your online customers. Who else to better promote your items than your customers? So, we're going to give buyers the tools needed to help spread the word about the awesome crafts they've found.

At the same time, sellers will be able to incentivse the buyers to do this by offering discounts if X number of people buy an item. Sellers who are just getting started may even create a listing to see if people are even interested in their product. Then if they get say, 10 buyers, they'll commit to creating the item for those buyers. If you know of Kickstarter, it's a lot like that, but on a smaller, handmade, scale.

My biggest concern is that the website is almost too basic.  If I stumbled across a site like this, I would worry that the lack of detail means that there's some hidden thing that's gonna bite me in the butt.

I'd like to have the option to see what else is being bought/sold (do I want to be affiliated with this company, are the other products up to my standards), what some people's opinons on their experiences have been, a full detailing of other potential hidden prices - shipping, commission by the website, etc.

In theory I like the idea, but there's not enough info on the website to make me totally comfortable with signing up.

I have to agree. With so many sites out here who want to get your email for spam or the like. It's not worth risking my email.

How will you generate income to keep the site going? Are you charging fees, sales percentage, are you selling advertising, or what? You would have to generate a LOT of traffic to get enough buyers to make it worth a crafter's while. How are you going to do that?

Great feedback. To answer the question about the simplicity of the site and the idea of asking for an email address: Currently, there is no public functionality for you to use. We simply created a page for people to enter their email address if they are interested in the idea and want to be kept informed when it does go live.

But the point that was brought up is great. Currently on some sites, users have to create an account before they can use all of the search tools, or buy an item. We are being very conscious of this, by keeping it extremely easy for customers to come in and find things they are interested in.


As for generating income, we will generate revenue from a final sale fee. We are working on some unique ideas to get around the idea of paying for "upgrades" to a listing. We'll have more information on this as we start to roll out the beta site.
