I'm posting this for a friend, Karen St. Dennis, who has a 15 year old daughter going for her girl scout gold award.
Her grandma passed away from cancer, so this challenge really means the world to her.
This would be a fantastic way to help a girl reach her goal, as well as helping cancer patients right within your own community!
Challenge Details:
My daughter is 15 and she is doing her Girl Scout Gold Award Project knitting and crocheting (or sewing) Chemo Caps and Lap Blankets for cancer patients.
Deadline is Between March 1 and August 1 of this year:
We are issuing you a challenge, if everyone we know makes just one cap or lap blanket and donate them to your local hospital or cancer center this would be a GREAT message to send.
there are certain guidelines to follow to do this,
For caps/hats -
-No wool or animal fibers, no angora, no alpaca, most hospitals won't allow them. (Plus they can itch!!!)
-They should be soft, like baby soft acrylics, or cotton yarns. I have been working with a 50% cotton/50% nylon yarn and it seems to be soft
- All yarn should be washable and machine dryable compatible, as cancer patients have compromised immune systems and everything needs frequent washings for sanitation.
- Finished hats should be fairly light in weight with little or no seams-
- Styles should be something along the idea of a beanie cap, but I've found some cute patterns for hats with a little bit of brim on it.
- Styles should be fairly "closed" without any gaps or anything. Chemo patients usually cannot stand sunlight for very long and can get burnt in less than 10 minutes. Hats are not only for warmth in the winter, but also protection all year round.
for the blankets -

- All yarn should be washable (and ideally drying machine compatible), as cancer patients have compromised immune systems and everything needs frequent washings for sanitation.
- sizes like a baby blanket or 32 x 45 approximately.(sewing works also)

I will make a hat or a lap blanket to honor my sister's memory...as she passed away from leukemia & I love that it would bring some comfort to someone going through cancer treatment today.
