I am not a newby to crochet and have made many successfull hats in the past.  Lately I have noticed a problem.  When I make the hats, just general beanie types, I am getting a weird bump where the rounds connect.  It's misshappening the hats, does anyone know why this happens and how to fix it?  TIA!!!

Can you post a picture of the problem?

It sounds like it could be a fairly common problem with seams... with sc, the seam can wander, and with taller stitches, the turning chain looks too different from the regular stitches.

The usual easy solution to the sc issue is to work in a spiral instead of joining the rounds.  For dc stitches, I usually use this no-turning-ch-dc technique.

Anyhow, a picture of the problem could help us identify the right solution for you. ^_^
