Accepting credit cards with just a laptop?

The only way i accept CC's is with my laptop! Either there's wifi at the show, or we tether our smartphone and use its 3g as a wifihotspot.

We tried just doing an order thorugh our website for the item the person at the show was buying, but our site has integrated shipping fees so that didn't work. Paypal doesn't let you just enter arbitrary numbers (so, if one product is 35, another is 80, etc.) so what we did is create a "Donate" button. Paypal generates code and creates this button - we put it on a hidden webpage on our website that only we know about. When we're at a show, we just use that button, enter the amount for the product, and then take our customer's info down.

It takes any credit card, and also allows them to pay with their paypal account if they want to.

If you want to use your laptop you can use paypal virtual terminal. The downside is that its $30 per month.  It is part of the website payments pro package so you do get some other extras as well such as the ability to process credit cards directly on your website.

I think Square is the best bet (www.squareup.com).  I see them all over the Bay Area - at coffee shops, craft fairs, etc.  And I think they charge a small fixed fee, instead of the high variable fees that the other card readers charge.
