I like to decorate boxes so that when a gift-giving occasion comes up I can put my gift into a nice box. I recently included one in a personal swap and since she received, I am able to post pictures!

I used a technique very similar to the one that craftewoman used to make her faux ceiling tiles.  The only difference was that since I was going for a more distressed look I used multiple paint colors before adding the black. I love the way it turned out and plan on using this technique again!

The only challenge was that the box lid fits so snuggly - the paint kept chipping off a small area on the top of the base whenever I took the lid off. After trying different mediums (including glue, various paints and colorings etc) I ended up having to use sharpie to color in that area. Not thrilled with that part, but sometimes there just aren't any other options.

What a lovely gift box!

I love painting boxes to put all sorts of trinkets and supplies into...you might want to try this little tip:  After the paint is dry, take some wax paper and rub it along the edges of the box and the lid...then, fold the wax paper in several layers and drape it over the box...stick the lid on for a few hours...the little bit of wax seems to make the lid slip on and off a bit better and the lid "expands" just the tiniest bit...I also do this if I have to mod podge the box--only I also hold the wax paper down with a few paper clips to make the lid expand just a bit more...does that make sense?
