My 4 year old girl loves lip balm so much that she practically goes through an entire tube in a day or two...which has had me extremely concerned.
I've thought to myself, "What's in this stuff?"   Undecided

Deciphering the label on the tube she'd been using most recently, it's practically Greek to me, so I get the idea that maybe mixing up something here at home with all natural ingredients would be possible for a mom like me to do.

I learned the how to & read up on the various oils & stuff that went into doing this from various sites...including craftster & today I whipped up a batch!

I even experimented with various flavors...and my house smells just like I'd made Grandma's Christmas candy! Flavors I used were non flavored, peppermint, sassafras, bubblegum, strawberry, and one blueberry one for my mother in law!  Wink

The lip balms turned out fantastic! They glide on smooth, moisturize well, and taste fabulous! I accomplished what I set out to do! Yay!
I'll definitely be doing this again!  Grin

OOOOOOH!  This would be fun to try!  Was it very hard?  Did you just order the tubes online?

Can I add that your pictures are amazing?

I'm so glad you like the photos! My other computer died in December & I haven't quite gotten the hang of this one yet!

To answer your questions, yes, I found the tubes online. Did a search to find them relatively close to me so I wouldn't have to wait that long to receive them, but then the snow & ice came last week. LOL! Ah, well.
It was SO easy! I just altered a recipe I'd found based on which oils did what & melted it all together in a pan within a pan of hot water on the stove until all the oils were melty...stirring with a chopstick, then separated the batch into smaller dishes within the same pan of water...so the oil didn't set up while I added my flavorings & sweeteners. I then used a warmed syringe type of tube thingy to inject the liquid oils into the tubes. You can ask for them at your local pharmacy. Lucky me to think to ask for one while refilling a prescription over the weekend.
The balms set up within about 20 min to a half hour! Super fun!

OOOOO- I want some  Cheesy

I also laughed when I read: "Flavors I used were non flavored..." Now I'm pondering that... non-flavored as a flavor!! (And now I've said flavored so many times to myself that the word has lost all meaning !)

Thanks for sharing! These look fantastic!

Those are great! I ended up using an oral medicine syringe...because I had it available & it was free.... but would use pipettes if I were going to be making more. I just don't have super good control to pour it directly from the bowl into the little tubes.

Thanks guys for all the great compliments! Definitely give this craft a try! I was completeley intimidated at first.

Maybe I'll even try soaping!

lol score for being super creative plus getting something for free! Yeah pipettes are almost a necessity for these..I used to use a 1 cup plastic measuring cup I had with a pour spout, but the pipette is a little more control. And it looks like you got the trick of overfilling them so they wouldn't have a divot in them when they cooled!

Go for it! It was so much fun and I have peace of mind now for it! One of the ingredients that made me go 'hmmm' was saccharin on my girl's commercially purchased tube! We prefer either sugar or all natural sweeteners here!

How messy is this as a project?

I admit that I made quite a mess of the workspace at first because I sprayed hot waxy oil all over before I got the hang of the syringe.  Embarrassed It won't be that messy next time!

How wonderful!  I have little containers to make lip gloss with DD, but she would love this as well. She has a slight obsession with lip balm and begs me to buy her some every time we walk into a store.
That's fantastic that you got a wonderful result after only one try!  I would probably make a big mess of it.  But it would be a fun learning process, right?  Wink

Absolutely! Recycling a tube for your personal use is a great idea! You may need a few of these though...because I was surprised at how much one batch made.  Smiley

Regular sized lip balm tubes hold .15 ounces ( a smidge over 4 grams) by weight so that helps in calculating! Cheesy

I love this idea!!!
I mix up a couple cups of sugar with a table spoon full of honey, and then enough olive oil to saturate the sugar... mix it all together & you've got a sugar scrub that will banish flaky dry winter skin like nobody's business! mmmmm... honey!  Cheesy

for some oils & wax, I used this supplier on etsy...who was extremely nice & helpful!
http://www.etsy.com/shop/countrysoapshack?ref=pr_shop_more

for the white plastic tubes I found this website & you'll find many different options from pots to slider tins:
http://www.naturesgardencandles.com/candlemaking-soap-supplies/category/82222/Lip-Balm-Containers.html

For my flavoring, I used candy oil from a little amish place down the road from me.  Wink

For more waxes & oils & colorants, I used this supplier & they have tubes as well:

Lip balm making is fun, good on you for having a go at it.

Depending on how many tubes you're filling, you can also purchase a filling tray to avoid overflow.
