Hello Texan craftsters!

I am very excited to be relocating to the Rio Grande Valley area--- I was accepted to Teach for America and will be teaching for two years. I don't know what school I'll be teaching in, and I know that the region is huge.

I have NEVER been to Texas. I know I'm in for a pretty big culture shock; I'm coming from Vermont.

I'm interested in finding out what kind of scene there is in the area. Do you have farmer's markets, neat vintage shops, craft stores? What's the night life like? How are the coffee shops, ARE there coffee shops? What's the best kind of food.... Are there community dark rooms? Can you eat and buy products locally? (as in made there and sold there)

What's housing like? anything I should avoid? Do cell phones work?

SOO many questions!

Any insight, tips, pointers, would be great!

Hey there -

Just joined the forum.  I'm from the Rio Grande Valley as well - McAllen to be exact.  What area are you teaching in?  I don't know how familiar you have become with the Valley, but if you have any questions I'll be glad to help you out.  Smiley
