Kids top to awesome strappy top for me!
«
on:
January 31, 2011 12:10:56 PM »
I got this top >>>
http://direct.asda.com/george/kid-s-clothing/older-boys/tops-and-t-shirts/punk-skull-print-dual-sleeve-top/GEM53222,default,pd.html
from a trip to ASDA. I got the biggest size 13-14 years for £3! But that still isn't going to fit a big girl like me so I got busy.
I cut off the sleeves (am going to make armwarmers with these when I gete chance) then cut the front panels to size and added some velvet panels in the sides, 2 straps from velvet and a band round the bottom (velvet again).
What do you think?
Me wearing it, excuse the mucky mirror!
On my dress form (front)
(back)
Constructive critisism welcome!

Alright, you asked for it!
I normally don't critique things, here.
I like the style you created, I like how it fits you. I love the youthful color of the green, and the black sets it off nicely. And the shoulder straps look good, too. maybe a bit loose on the top center front bust, but I have a feeling that is going to change for you (see below).
I don't like that bunchy back seam thing you have going on. Or the fact that your hand stitching shows. I know that knits are hard to work with.
What I can see to improve this, is that bunchy seam being opened up again, interfacing applied to the underside of both edges (see (*) below), eyelets attached to each side, and a lacing thread (like the corsets of old days) laced up the back. Maybe even all the way up the back. That way you can adjust the fit if your size changes (you look young, and you will probably get more boobaliscious???).
(*) do they have WonderUnder (iron on adhesive tape) where you live? It is sometimes called fusible webbing, and would be perfect to adhere the stabalizer (interfacing) to the underside before you put the eyelets in. I am guessing you are in the UK, so I don't know what is available there.
All in all, I think it is a great project. And a wonderful recon.

You did a marvelous job Baloo!!! I love the way you used velvet on the side panels.
We've all seen the knit fabric contrast there, the velvet is a nice change.
As for the back stitching I wouldn't worry about it too much. Maybe if you have some
experience with embroidery you could add a design there with thread...maybe mimic a word from the front.
Or if you have any velvet left use it to add something there. Or leave it the way it is.
I like it!

I know the back looks messy but looks better on me than on the dress form as I have a big tummey/hips so it looks less baggy. The stiching looks bad and I wasn't going to leave it like that I was going to put a fishnet panel down the back as I had a piece in my scraps but it is too short for it so just left it hoping I would get a better idea.
Corseted sounds like a good idea but would need to buy a grommet thing, may have to look into buying one.
I do live in the UK and yes we have hemming webb, I've seen it as ASDA.
BTW How old do you think I am lol, I am 19, these boobs haven't got any bigger in years lol.

I do love my velvet, it is abit of an obsession!
As I said earlier in my post the back stiching wasn't supposed to be visable but the initial plan failed lol.
