*sorry to keep rambling like this i just looked up the art work and i was just wondering, do you know how it was done? is it just an ink drawing? its in a series like a print would be so maybe it was done the old fashioned way but i dont see any indent around the paper that would let me know it was done with the press like prints are.

It's screenprinting done with Print Gocco, which Jose Pulido mentions on his Etsy store. I wasn't sure what that meant, so I looked it up and found this site: http://www.diylife.com/2007/12/14/diy-definitions-print-gocco/ . So it is a print, but done in a newfangled way. Wink

this is a hotly debated issue
but I think in the case where someone's making money off someone else's work, even if it is modified, it is copyright theft if the image is clearly copied from the original. And the individual who created the original work has the right to take that case to court if they think they have a case - then it is in the hands of the jury to decide if copyright has been breached.

We all get inspiration from places, and thats fine, Katie's not selling this so there's nothing to sue her over. No harm no foul. Tracing is not cheating in embroidery.

But you're right, intellectual property rights are complicated in the art/design world. It is a funny thing. If you drew your own Jose What-cha-call-him inspied art and then embroidered it, you could sell that no probelm.

Aside from all this, this work is awesome, the colouring is excellent and the stitching is so tidy! congrats Katie, thanks for switching me on to this guy!

yeah it is tricky. I have only thought of selling a reproduction of an artists work once, unfortunately that artist never got back to me. this piece, however, was for my friend who wanted something embroidered that was star wars themed. he is a tattoo artist so i thought how cool would it be to do something by Jose cause his day of the dead art would be loved by a tattoo artist. i am however hoping i get some cool artwork in return Wink

I sew clothes too and it gets EVEN MORE vague when you're talking sewing patterns in theory every 'shape' is copyrighted... I mean come on... you can't copyright the pattern for a T-shirt or a circle skirt! but there *are* sewing patterns out there for those things...  you can't go around sewing up 100's of copies of a sewing pattern and selling them online, thats illegal, you can sell ONE of the garment if you buy ONE of the pattern, thats fine.

but yea, nobody's going to complain about such a flattering rendition of a great artwork.

and I hope you do get something awesome in return, you deserve it :-)
